BASIC STUDIES OF THE ELECTRON SPIN ENERGY LEVELS IN A RUBY CRYSTAL FOR PRODUCING MASER ACTION AT 2623MHz

Ruby_maser_crop..jpg (94642 bytes)Electron spin resonance studies on the energy levels in a Ruby Crystal required for amplifying signals at 2623MHz were carried out.

Calculations and measurements on the effect of different orientations of the magnetic field on the energy level scheme used for three-level maser action were studied. It was possible to correlate these effects with relaxation mechanisms between the electron spin energy levels  in the crystal.

The microwave frequncy and power required to achieve population inversion was determined.   A superconducting  solenoid was designed to replace a water-cooled conventional copper wire solenoid.
